We assume all newcomers have a Foreign Passport and a CUAET Work/Visitor Permit

Landlord Letter / Proof of Residence – No Prerequisites
You will need 2 proofs of residence for some of the tasks ahead. One proof is a letter from the landlord confirming the newcomer lives at their new address. Have the newcomer’s landlord complete this form and sign it as proof of residence.

Make an Appointment
- Before you go to the bank, you must make an appointment with Anna Kelly (contact above)
Offer
- RBC offers Ukrainians (CUAET Work Visa) a 1-year free Chequing and Savings account with unlimited transactions.
- RBC offers a free translation service for the setup of the bank account. A translator on Zoom will be available during the meeting to explain everything to the newcomer.
Debit Card
- You are given a temporary debit card that can be used at any RBC bank until your official card arrives in the mail.
- The official debit card will come in the mail and needs to be used once with your PIN to activate it.
Virtual Visa Debit Card
- A Virtual Visa Debit Card can be ordered at the branch to allow online purchases from your debit account.

Phone App
- To download the RBC App you need a Canadian SIM card.
- Also, your Google Play or Apple iStore account region needs to be set to ‘Canada’ to see the RBC App.
Credit Card
- You need to be working in Canada with a Canadian pay cheque before they can issue a credit card to start building credit in the Canadian system
- RBC Offers a Newcomers Credit Card where you do not need a credit score to apply, you only need proof of employment.
Proof of Residence
- Ensure you get a printed void cheque as you will need it as 1 proof of residence for later steps (for setting up Medicare, etc.).
Phone Plan – No Prerequisites
The newcomer is not eligible for a traditional cell phone plan without a Canadian credit history. If they have their own device they can set up Pay-as-you-go by pre-paying for a plan with cash, debit, or foreign credit card.

Plan Details
- $10 one-time fee when purchasing a SIM Card
- All plans that include Data come with unlimited Talk and Text (In Canada)
- If all the Data is used it will simply stop working (no overage fees)
- Each month another plan must be purchased
- This can be done by going into the store and paying cash, debit, or foreign credit card
- You can also do this online if you received your Virtual Debit Visa Card
- Each month you can change to a different plan (more or less Data)
- If you decide to change carriers, plans, etc. you can always bring the same phone number
- If you do NOT pay your bill 3 months in a row your phone number will be lost
Social Insurance Number (SIN) – No Prerequisites
Doing this step in person will give you a SIN on the same day. If you do the application online it will take 10 business days to receive your SIN.

English Lessons for Adults (NBCC/CCNB) – No Prerequisites
NBCC/CCNB provides language assessment and classes in New Brunswick. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has funded free classes for Ukrainian newcomers, called Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC). They must complete a Language Assessment before they can register for the lessons and registration for the assessment and lessons is done through the iCent tool. iCent is a third-party registration tool that NBCC/CCNB uses for newcomers to register for their language classes

After you’ve registered…
- NBCC/CCNB will respond to the email address provided in the registration process with a date/time to complete the assessment in person (location above)
- It will take approximately 1-2 weeks after you complete your assessment to receive your results (CLBPT Assessment Report)
- Once you receive your report you can apply for the LINC program below

Lesson Details
- You will receive an email letting you know when you can start attending classes
- CLBPT 1-3: Live sessions are weekly on Monday and Wednesday (9:30 AM – 2:30 PM) at the Miramichi location (above)
- CLBPT 3-4: Online sessions are weekly on Monday and Wednesday (6:00 PM – 9:00 PM)

Financial Assistance – Requires Bank Account
The Government of Canada is offering a one-time, non-taxable benefit per person. The application must be done online.
Adult (18+) $3,000 and Child $1,500.

Notes
- Upon successfully submitting your application, the money should arrive directly into your bank account within 10 business days
- If there is an error message, you should call the phone number listed in the error message and ask for help
Finding a Job (Working NB) – Requires SIN
Working NB offers employment counseling to help newcomers prepare to enter the Canadian workforce. There are many programs in New Brunswick to help newcomers enter the job market and Working NB is the way to access these programs.

Details
- The Employment Counselor will understand the newcomer’s interests and abilities and look for programs and jobs that would be a good fit.
- An interpreter will be there (via Zoom) to translate.
Skills Training/English Lessons
- The most common limiting factor in job placement for newcomers is English skills. Working NB will register newcomers for online English lessons to help them reach their job market potential. (Please note: A language assessment is required before they can begin classes, see above English Lessons for Adults).
- Blended Learning Ukrainian English (BLUE) – Online only
- This program is free and is especially for Ukrainians. Instructors are Ukrainian as well. Full-time or part-time, depending on the level.
- Blended Online Language Training (BOLT) – Online only
- There is a 150$ registration fee. This program is open to all newcomers and Canadians who qualify, not just Ukrainians. Full-time or part-time, depending on the level.
- For the online classes, a computer with a webcam, a headset with a microphone, and a high-speed internet connection are required.
- Blended Learning Ukrainian English (BLUE) – Online only
Medicare – Requires Proof of Residence
Doing this step online will give you a Medicare number in 1-3 business days. If you do this step in person the wait is much longer.

The New Brunswick Public Library has many free resources that can benefit a newcomer, such as books, videos, computer access, tools, social programs, educational programs, English lessons (Rosetta Stone), etc.

English Lessons Online – Rosetta Stone
- Free Online Access to Rosetta Stone English Lessons is available once you have your NB Public Library Card

Immigration Medical Exam – Requires Medicare & Bank Account
The Immigration Medical Exam (IME) must be completed within 90 days of arriving in Canada by an IRCC-approved Doctor. The IME involves an office visit and then bloodwork and X-Ray at the Fredericton Regional Hospital (DECH).
Fredericton has the best offer and is worth the slightly longer drive!
- They have the lowest medical fee ($100/person for the office visit)

- They do NOT require a passport photo

- Each person requiring a medical must have a separate scheduled appointment (which costs $100 each)
Financial
- For anyone 11 or older the entire medical exam costs: $238.70 / person
- Office Visit: $100 / person
- X-Ray/Bloodwork: $138.70 / person
- Kids under 11 do not need X-Ray/Bloodwork; therefore, they will only pay $100
- The website might show higher costs than listed here; on the phone, they said they will only charge $100 total for the office visit for Ukrainians with CUAET permits.
- The Hospital charge for x-ray/bloodwork is out of their hands and is not covered by Medicare.
- St. Vincent-de-Paul’s Church may have potential funding options for this

Work Restrictions
- Because they have not completed their Immigration Medical Exam BEFORE entering Canada there are work restrictions on their work permit. This is to reduce their direct human interaction in certain industries before the Canadian government has verified they are healthy.
- These restrictions can be removed once the Immigration Medical Exam has been completed and sent to the IRCC.

Vaccines (Public Health) – Requires Medicare
Public Health will identify any missing vaccines and ensure they are in the system to receive upcoming vaccines as they age.

How it works
- A public health nurse (RN) will be assigned to each family
- This nurse will enter the known vaccines into the NB system
- They will then determine what vaccines are required to become up to date with the Canadian guidelines
- This RN will call the contact number to arrange an appointment to update any required vaccines
- In the event of no vaccine record, they will still arrange any required vaccines
- All required vaccines are free
- You do NOT need a family doctor to do this process
- All updated vaccine records are shared with the schools automatically
- Any future vaccines are given in the school system
- For children before school (less than 6) public health will arrange all vaccines
Family Doctor – Requires Medicare

Salvation Army – No Prerequisites
The Salvation Army offers aid in many different ways for newcomers. By registering with The Salvation Army they are able to shop for free in their store for clothing and household items. Also, there are many programs that are offered throughout the year (Christmas, back-to-school, etc.) to help families.
